UK: Supporters celebrate Assange’s birthday outside Belmarsh prison

A group of supporters of Julian Assange gathered outside Belmarsh Prison in London, where the activist is being held, to celebrate his 49th birthday, on Friday. The WikiLeaks founder's supporters were seen outside the prison singing happy birthday and cutting a cake in his honours, while carrying banners and signs demanding for his release. Fidel Narvaez, who used to work at Ecuadorian consulate in London, was part of the gathering and commented on Assange's situation. «This time he is completely in isolation. He doesn't have anybody to celebrate his birthday. The most painful thing is that he has family, two little children and a lovely partner who are celebrating on their own as well missing him.» «It's up to us to get together, support this case and hopefully next birthday Julian is going to be able to celebrate in freedom,» he added. Assange was sentenced to 50 weeks in prison in May 2019 for breaching his bail conditions to avoid extradition to Sweden on sexual assault allegations. Despite his sentence coming to an end on September 22, a British judge ordered Assange to remain in prison while facing extradition to the US, with a full hearing set to begin on September 7.
