UK: Seats almost full on tube despite lockdown as 1/3 of TfL staff off work

A tube carriage was seen busy in London on Thursday morning despite the country being in the middle of a lockdown due to the coronavirus outbreak. Footage shows a Central Line train stopping at Mile End Station, East London, with many commuters onboard. Some commuters have taken to social media to complain that crowded conditions on the London underground might put lives at risk. Mayor Sadiq... Еще Khan stated on Wednesday that tube ridership had fallen 88 percent on Tuesday compared to the same period of last year, but that more Londoners «should do the right thing and stay at home.» Transport for London (TfL) has reduced its services, closing down stations and making trains less frequent. «We must stop all non-essential use of public transport now,» the mayor tweeted as images of crowded trains emerged this week. Today he added that TfL cannot run more services because one in three staff are off sick or are self-isolating. On Monday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson intensified the UK's response to the COVID-19 crisis by putting the country on lockdown for three weeks. Coronavirus has killed 465 people in the UK so far.
