UK: Public reacts to recently announced coronavirus measures in London

People in London expressed their opinions, on Tuesday, on the announced anti-coronavirus measures due to be enforced as of Thursday. «I'm not happy about it, I'm really not happy about it. I just got here, I just got to London and you're closing and you're opening, and you're closing and you're opening, and yeah, I think it might be a problem when politicians make decisions,» said Mari. Kennie, a Scottish native, said, «I'll be honest, I'm not an educated epidemiologist but if the experts think it works, I don't know, does that necessarily make them right? They tend to be wrong about a few things in the past. There's a lot of experts that say masks don't work for example, and some say that masks do help. So I really don't know if it's a good thing or not. It's certainly not a good thing for the economy, that’s for sure.» Local resident Glyn said, «The issue was you know that pubs were one of the first things to open again, and the behaviour that was straight away started happening was absolutely ridiculous. Because there was no social distancing going on, everyone was mixing like Covid wasn't even a thing. It's not surprising that that's come back to bite us really, so yeah I think frankly this should happen sooner, because the pubs are such a health and safety risk. So yeah, I'm very supportive of it.» On Monday, Johnson announced a new set of measures to counter the reported resurgence of COVID-19 cases in the UK. More than 400,000 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in the UK, the largest in Europe, according to the government figures. On Monday, the UK COVID alert level was raised from 3 to 4, the second most serious stage, meaning transmission is high or rising exponential.
