UK: Parents protest lessons on LGBT relationships in Birmingham schools

Protesters gathered outside Anderton Park Primary School in Birmingham on Friday, where parents and others rallied to oppose the teaching of same-sex relationships to pupils. Protesters held a rally carrying placards against the initiative, which is supported by head teacher Sarah Hewitt-Clarkson, who asked for a more effective enforcement by the government. Many of the protesters claimed that... Еще they were not involved in the school's decision to provide education on LGBT relationships, as one protester Shakeel Afsar said. «It also goes against the DFE [Department for Education] guidelines as there were no consultations. No parents were consulted in regards to the material that was provided to our children.» Others stressed the rally should not be branded as a homophobic protest, claiming they had the right to choose if the subject was not appropriate for their children. «You know, I just want everyone to know that this is not an anti-LGBT protest, this is what they're trying to make it out to be, but this is just about parents having rights over what the children are told to learn,” said one protester. On Tuesday, UK Education Secretary Damian Hinds stated he strongly encouraged teaching schoolchildren about LGBT relationships, after a parliamentary debate on this topic.
