UK: 'Not too late to save Brexit' — Boris Johnson in resignation speech

Former UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson lamented Brexit's divergence from its original conception set forth by Prime Minister Theresa May in her 2017 Lancaster speech, proclaiming it was «not too late to save Brexit,» in his resignation speech before the House of Commons in London on Wednesday. «A strong, independent, self-governing Britain,» said Johnson as he referred to the May's Lancaster... Еще vision. «Not the miserable permanent limbo of Chequers,» he added, referring to May's 'soft' Brexit plan which was received with outcry, backlash and saw 10 MPs resigning forcing the Prime minister to give into amendments. Johnson had announced his resignation on July 9, less than 24 hours after then Brexit Secretary David Davis presented his own resignation. May's Cabinet had communicated its exit strategy at Chequers the week before, which was branded as 'soft' as it looks for the UK to maintain close ties to Brussels after leaving the union. Britain is currently set to leave the European Union on March 29, 2019. **Restrictions: Parliamentary Recording Unit — NEWS USE ONLY.
