UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid confirmed that Wikileaks founder Julian Assange was arrested by Metropolitan police for «failing to surrender to his extradition proceedings», while giving a statement in the House of Commons in London on Thursday.
He expressed satisfaction about the Ecuadorian government's decision to drop asylum for the activist:
«I am pleased that President Moreno has taken this... Еще decision and I extend the UK's thanks to him for resolving this situation. Ecuador's actions recognise that the UK criminal justice system is one in which rights are protected and in which, contrary to what Mr. Assange and his supporters may claim, he and his legitimate interests will be protected.»
Javid added that Assange was informed about the decision of Quito's government to remove him from the embassy by the Ecuadorian ambassador, in the early hours of Thursday. He also said that Assange was immediately checked by health staff to assess he was fit for detention.
The Home Office Secretary stated that the extradition documents must now reach the judge within the next 65 days.
UK Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott responded to Javid's statement saying that Assange's whistleblowing activity was the only reason which led to an extradition warrant against him.
