Extra UK immigration enforcement will be deployed to the Belgian port of Zeebrugge to assist in the investigation of the 39 Essex lorry deaths, UK Home Secretary Priti Patel said during a parliamentary session in London on Monday. Zeebrugge was reportedly the point of departure of the container before it arrived in Britain.
“I’ve already spoken to my Belgian counterpart, Minister De Crem, to... Еще invigorate the work that is taking place across both countries. And I can confirm to the House that, as of today, I have received agreement from the Belgian authorities to deploy extra UK immigration enforcement officers to Zeebrugge,” said Patel.
In addition, UK Border Force staff will also intensify their work in Purfleet where the container reportedly arrived. “They too are working alongside Essex police to get further information regarding this incident. And the Home Office will also accelerate our joint intelligent lead operation between the police, the National Crime Agency, and immigration enforcement,” Patel added.
The identification and nationality of the victims have not yet been fully confirmed, she stated.
