Extinction Rebellion protesters headed to London's Parliament Square on Tuesday in a demonstration planned to coincide with the return of lawmakers from their summer recess.
The march was part of several organised throughout the city, with different groups of protesters heading to landmarks in central London, on the first day of a planned ten day campaign of demonstrations in the UK capital.
Emma, a protester, described her reasons for joining the demo, saying «Coming out of COVID-19 we all know we should be having a green recovery and we're just ignoring it, basically. We are heading towards the worst trajectory, and the science is there and we are ignoring it.»
Another demonstrator said that the coronavirus pandemic had been exacerbated by current climate-unfriendly policies, remarking that «without the mass consumption of industrialised meat we wouldn't have the coronavirus and it spread far, far faster because of our over reliance on air transportation.»
Around 65 protesters had been arrested by the early afternoon, according to the Metropolitan Police, as they sought to block roads around Parliament Square.
