Turkey: See the last images of soon-to-be submerged 12,000-year-old town

Footage filmed on Saturday shows the last images of the ancient Turkish town of Hasankeyf in Batman Province that will soon be inundated following the filling of the Ilisu Dam reservoir on the Tigris river. The ancient city has been dated back to 12,000 years ago, based on neolithic remains found at the site. The dam, which is part of the South-eastern Anatolian Project (GAP), will reportedly... Еще generate some 1,200 megawatts of electricity. It has however drawn criticism in Turkey and Iraq, as it is expected to displace thousands of people and submerge Hasankeyf when it is filled, reportedly on June 10. In 1978, Hasankeyf, which sits on banks of the Tigris river, and the surrounding area was declared a 'First Degree Archaeological Site' by Turkey's Supreme Board of Monuments.
