Police dispersed those who gathered in Istanbul on Friday for a 'farewell ceremony' in honour of left-wing popular folk music group member Ibrahim Gokcek, who lost his life after a 323-day hunger strike.
The protesters marched in the Gazi neighbourhood chanting 'Gokcek is immortal', when police deployed pepper spray and detained several.
The 41-year-old, who was a bass guitarist for the band... Еще Group Yorum, died in intensive care in an Istanbul hospital on Thursday, two days after abandoning his 323-day fast in protest of the government's crackdown on the group. Gokcek will be buried in his hometown Kayseri.
The musician is the second band member to die after a hunger strike. On April 3, the group's singer Helin Bolek died on the 288th day of her fast.
The Turkish government accuses Group Yorum, formed in 1985, of links to the outlawed Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front, a militant group that is classified as a terrorist group by Turkey, the US and the EU.
