Supporters of a pro-Kurdish party clashed with police during a joint campaign rally and the Kurdish New Year or Newroz celebration that attracted tens of thousands in Istanbul on Sunday.
A few protesters could be seen being escorted away by police after clashes broke out between them.
The rest of the event, which continued peacefully, saw protesters hold up banners supporting imprisoned Kurdish... Еще politician Selahattin Demirtas and chanting slogans.
The rally was called ahead of local elections by the left-wing Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), which the Turkish government accuses of having links to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The group is classified as a terrorist organisation in Turkey, as well as in the United States, United Kingdom and European Union.
Turkish local elections will be held on Sunday, March 31.
