Turkey: Istanbul locals react ahead of reopening of Hagia Sophia as mosque

Istanbul residents reacted on Thursday to the ongoing preparations for the Hagia Sophia, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to be reopened as a mosque on Friday. «Here, our brothers living in Istanbul lived freely in other religions, in this sense, it is important for us in terms of representation,» said Yusuf who travelled from the northwestern city of Bursa to witness the grand reopening. The first prayers will be performed on Friday in the Hagia Sophia after a Turkish court overturned a 1934 decision that turned the holy site into a museum. Some 500 to 1000 people will be permitted to pray in the building, according to social distancing guidelines enforced to curb the spread of coronavirus.
