Turkey: 'Honking' silence commemorates 81st anniversary of Ataturk's death

Thousands of Turks took to the streets of Istanbul to commemorate the 81st anniversary of the death of the Republic of Turkey's founding father, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk on Sunday. Footage shows people waving flags and wearing t-shirts with picture of Ataturk. At 9:05 local time (06:05 GMT) not only Instanbul and the whole country came to a standstill with people standing on the streets, sirens... Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was born in the now-Greek city of Thessaloniki in 1881 when it was part of the Ottoman Empire. After World War I, following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Ataturk led Turkey in its War of Independence against the European Allies. Following the war, the Republic of Turkey was established in 1923, with Ataturk as its president. He passed away at the age of 57 in Istanbul's Dolmabahce Palace on November 10, 1938.
