Turkey: First brewery of Ottoman Empire razed to be replaced with Islamic centre

Turkish authorities have started razing Istanbul's historic beer factory Bomonti to replace it with an Islamic culture centre, footage from Wednesday showed. The building was handed to Turkey's Religious Affairs Directorate almost a year ago. «That method used by the government, as can be seen in many other cases, represents an attempt to erase an important structure from the urban public memory through privatisations or allocations of such structures to Directorate of the Religious Affairs or religious foundations or bodies,» said Head of Istanbul Chamber of Architects Esin Koymen. The Bomonti brewery which was built in 1890, was the first beer factory to be established during the Ottoman empire.
