The post was unfilled since Russia's last Ambassador to Turkey Andrei Karlov was shot and killed in the Turkish capital late last year. After Yerkhov presented his diplomatic documents to Ergogan and shook hands with him, several other members of the Russian delegation to Turkey greeted the Turkish president. On December 19, Karlov was making a speech during the opening ceremony of a photo exhibition called 'Russia as Seen by the Turks' in Ankara, when a gunman shot him in the back. The perpetrator, who was subsequently killed by police, was identified as off-duty police officer Mevlut Mert Altintas.
