Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan commemorated the victims of the 15th of July 2016 coup d'etat attempt, during a speech he held at Ataturk airport in Istanbul on Monday, on a day that marks the third anniversary of the events.
«I salute with respect and fondness every member of our hero nation who stood in front of planes, tanks, bullets in order to protect our nation's independence and... Еще our country's future on the night of the 15th of July 2016,» said Erdogan.
He also paid tribute to those who died during the failed coup by saying that «if today we can speak, breath, work freely, it is thanks to our martyrs, our veterans and our heroes.»
The president also touched on Turkey's purchase of Russian-made S-400 air-defence missile systems, reiterating that the components are currently being shipped to Turkey and that the system will be set up by April 2020. He added that those missiles are «the strongest defence system against people who want to attack our nation.»
On July 15, 2016 a part of the Turkish military started an operation aiming to topple Erdogan and his government.
More than 300 people were reportedly killed and more than 2,100 injured, with government buildings, including the Turkish Parliament and the Presidential Palace being bombed from the air. At least 40,000 are said to have been detained in connection with the coup.
