Turkey: Erdogan commemorates 79-th anniversary of Ataturk's death in Ankara

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan took part in an official ceremony commemorating the 79th anniversary of the death of the Republic of Turkey's founding father, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, in Ankara, Friday. Thousands took part in a procession which finished at the Kemal Ataturk Memorial. In the morning the country also stood for traditional two minutes of silence in the memory of Ataturk... Еще. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was born in the now-Greek city of Thessaloniki in 1881 when it was part of the Ottoman Empire. After World War I, following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Ataturk led Turkey in its War of Independence against the European Allies. Following the war the Republic of Turkey was established in 1923, with Ataturk as its president. He passed away at the age of 57 in Istanbul's Dolmabahce Palace on November 10, 1938.
