Turkey: Constantinople Patriarchate and Ukrainian President sign co-operation agreement

The Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, leader of Orthodox Christianity's principal body, and the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed a «bilateral agreement of interaction and co-operation» in Istanbul on Sunday. Patriarch Bartholomew said that the agreement now paves the way for the much anticipated independence of the Ukrainian Church which, in his words, is a right shared by «all the... Еще people in Eastern Europe and the Balkans.» The Moscow Patriarchate, which oversees most of Ukraine's Orthodox parishes, strongly criticised the move. The Holy Synod, the highest governing body of the Russian Orthodox Church, cut ties with the Constantinople Patriarchate, after it recognised the the new self-governing, or autocephalus, Ukrainian Church on October 11.
