Turkey: Ataturk statue attacked, assailant says «no idol worshipping in Islam»

A travelling salesman attacked a statue of former Turkish President Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in Sanliurfa, southern Turkey, reportedly saying that 'idol worshipping has no place in Islam' as he did it, Sunday. The local man attempted to cut through the statue's leg with a wooden sickle before police arrived at the scene and detained him for questioning. Ataturk is the founding father of the... Еще Turkish Republic, which he established in 1923. He was ideologically opposed to a marriage of Islam and the State, identifying as a secularist and infusing Turkey with these beliefs. The man, reported locally to be Mehmet Malbora, allegedly shouted, «There is no idol worshipping in Islam. Are those who protect the idol worshipping descendants of the Prophet?»
