Hindu worshippers attended Gadhimai festival that is held once in five years at the Gadhimai Temple of Bariyarpur on Tuesday, with thousands of animals, including buffaloes and goats being slaughtered.
«Many childless couples offer prayers to Gauri Matha and wish to have children. When their wishes are fulfilled and when they become parents they offer buffalo or goat sacrifices to Gauri Matha... Еще. So Gauri Matha is happy and if Matha is happy, she will bless us with more happiness and prosperous life,» said Manohar Thapa, a festival attendee.
According to reports, between 3,000 and 6,500 buffaloes were slaughtered during the festival.
The festival, dubbed «the bloodiest» in the world, has polarised the society, with activists calling for it to be banned and the Nepalese supreme court 2015 ruling calling on the government to stop the slaughter.
