Thailand: Vegetarian festival takes piercing to the extreme *GRAPHIC*

Dedicated religious devotees pierced their flesh with swords, needles, and knives at the annual Vegetarian Festival in Phuket City on Thursday. The 9-day festival sees religious devotees perform ritual mutilations without anesthetic, including piercing different areas of their bodies with sharp objects, slashing their tongues and other body parts and being hit with firecrackers. Еще festival marks the start of the 9th lunar month of the traditional Chinese calendar, and is celebrated by local Chinese communities throughout south-east Asia, where it is often known as the Nine Emperor Gods Festival. The festival is believed to bring good luck to those who participate in the painful rituals, as well as restraining from sex, alcohol or meat.
