Syria: War-torn Raqqa decimated by IS battle

Raqqa was reduced to rubble in the wake of a final showdown between opposition forces and the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) on Tuesday. The city has been turned to a deserted wasteland of burnt-out cars and twisted metal, with no working electricity or running water. Now bulldozers have started to clear away wreckage and concrete barricades, and to slowly try and recover... Еще Raqqa's war-scarred landscape. Less than one percent of the population's 300,000 now remains in the city, which is still laced with booby traps and explosives laid down by a retreating IS. Some 3,000 bombs have reportedly been dropped on the former IS stronghold by the US-led coalition since January, paving the way for a ground victory by the opposition forces of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the People's Protection Unit (YPG). Raqqa formerly served as the defacto capital of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL). The capturing of Raqqa serves as a significant territorial and symbolic blow to the militant group.
