Co-chair of the Syrian Democratic Council, Amina Omar, warned of a «humanitarian catastrophe» if Turkey «attacks» northern Syria, speaking from an undisclosed location in north-eastern Syria on Monday.
The statement follows the announcement of the US withdrawal from this part of the country, a move its allied Kurdish forces equate to a betrayal.
Omar stressed that «the White House once again... Еще agreed to Turkey's occupation of north-eastern Syria,» calling on the international community to protect the people of the region.
The White House's decision to pull out troops from the area came before a planned Turkish military operation to create a 'safe zone' in northern Syria.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed the White House statement at a news conference on Monday, stating that the official withdrawal of US troops had begun. The planned operation aims to clear US-backed Kurdish forces from the region, groups which Turkey considers terrorists.
