The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) continued its military offensive in the eastern countryside of Idlib, on Wednesday, reportedly closing in on the strategic town of Saraqib.
«By taking control of this axis today we have encircled Saraqib by 70 to 80 per cent from all sides and now we are taking control over an area located on the borders of the highway, which is a vital trade and transportation route... Еще for Syria,” said a Syrian Arab Army officer.
He added: “Our goal is to reach the Syrian Arab Army units that are on mission in Aleppo and god's willing our units will meet the other [SAA] units to secure the M4 and M5 highways.»
Footage shows SAA tanks and soldiers in the villages they recently took control of, as well as clouds of smoke billowing after shelling.
In the past weeks, the SAA has been steadily advancing and retaking Idlib towns and villages previously held by the militants.
The SAA seeks to regain control of the M5 highway, a crucial transportation link between the capital Damascus and Aleppo.
