Syria: SAA and SARC operations in full swing as Deir ez-Zor liberation draws closer

Commander of a Syrian Arab Army (SAA) military squadron Brigadier Ahmad Sulaiman said that SAA operations along with Russian backing «created an appropriate working ground for the advancement of Syrian troops and facilitated their work faster towards Deir ez-Zor,» speaking from the embattled city, Saturday, as the SAA continued scoring further gains against self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS... Еще; formerly ISIS/ISIL). «With help from Russian Air Force, the Syrian Air Force attacked these places before the arrival of Syrian troops in order to weaken and destroy their ability to attack and to facilitate the troops coming from the direction of Raqqa in the west and from the side of Palmyra, Kabajeb and Shola from the south,» Sulaiman said. The commander went on to confirm that «over the next few hours the Syrian Arab Army will reopen the roads» in the areas surrounding Deir ez-Zor. On his end, chief officer of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) branch in Deir ez-Zor said that SARC «sent 36 vehicles filled with rescuing and medical materials to Deir ez-Zor and they will be followed by other vehicles.» In recent days, pro-government forces have made rapid advances with tanks and helicopters to push through IS lines. On Tuesday, SAA units had linked up with the previously-surrounded troops, thus breaking a three-year-long siege of the government-held enclave of Deir ez-Zor. Deir ez-Zor, which is situated southeast of IS' former stronghold of Raqqa, has been under siege by IS since 2014.
