A convoy comprising 40 trucks carrying humanitarian aid arrived in Deir ez-Zor, Thursday, two days after the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) lifted a three-year-long siege by the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) of the government-held enclave.
The convoy reportedly travelled through the roads that had recently been recaptured by SAA; however, the humanitarian convoy was forced to... Еще take a detour to avoid IS fighters, who are still present along the eastern section of the Al-Sukhnah-Deir ez-Zor highway.
In recent days, pro-government forces have made rapid advances with tanks and helicopters to push through IS lines. However much of Deir ez-Zor province, including a military base and a number of towns and villages, remains under IS control. Sappers have since been working on the route to clear it of mines.
The four kilometre (2.5 mile) long corridor into Deir ez-Zor was created after SAA units pushed through IS lines on Tuesday to link up with previously-surrounded government troops.
Deir ez-Zor, which is situated southeast of IS' former stronghold of Raqqa, had been under siege by IS since 2014.
