Syria: Deputy FM says US and UK supplying chemical agents to terrorists

Following a government enquiry into the supposed chemical weapons attack in Khan Sheikhoun, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad concluded that the US and UK «support terrorist organisations» by «supply[ing] not only conventional weapons, but also poisonous substances.» Speaking at a press conference in Damascus on Wednesday, Mekdad stated that «Terrorists used poisonous substances that... Еще cause irritation and soreness in the district of Aleppo Governorate, as well as Jobar and Qaboun, in eastern Ghouta in the Damascus Governorate.» «These substances are used by police to disperse crowds. After these areas were recaptured from terrorists, weapons and ammunition cashes were found, which also contained chemical irritants that were ready to use.» Showing pictures of the weapons discovered, Mekdad said that the chemicals that had been found «were made by 'Federal Laboratories' in the United States,» adding that the «poisonous substances were made by a British company and an American company.» «Therefore, we can say with confidence that the USA and Great Britain, along with their allies in the region, support terrorist organisations in various ways, and in doing so violate the Chemical Weapons Convention. They supply not only conventional weapons, but also poisonous substances.» On April 20, Western countries blocked the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) from accepting Russia and Iran's proposal to investigate the circumstances of the alleged chemical attack in Syria's Khan-Sheikhoun. Washington DC continues to hold Assad responsible for the alleged strike, with Damascus denying launching the attack. US President Donald Trump later ordered Tomahawk missile strikes on the al-Shayrat Airbase in Syria, claiming that it was as a direct response to the alleged attack.
