Syrian President Bashar al-Assad visited the Grand Mosque of Qara some 95km (60mi) north of Damascus near Syria's border with Lebanon as Eid al-Adha begun, Friday, marking the holiest feast day in the Islamic calendar.
The visit comes after the government forces won a series of battles against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIL/ISIS) in the region on Monday, allowing the... Еще president to travel more freely through the territory.
Eid al-Adha is the second of two globally celebrated holidays in Islam, the other Eid Al-Fitr, with the former honouring Ibrahim/Abraham's will to sacrifice his son to God before Jibra'il/Gabriel's intervention. Animals are often sacrificed on the holiday to remember Ibrahim's offering.
