Switzerland: WHO confirms Ebola outbreak in the Congo

The World Health Organisation (WHO) confirmed that there is an Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo's province of Equateur and that the response is well underway at a press conference in Geneva, Friday. Peter Salama, Deputy Director-General of Emergency Preparedness and Response at the WHO, told journalists in Geneva that the agency was preparing for all eventualities. They... Еще were informed on May 3 of the possible outbreak and ran tests alongside the Congolese Ministry of Health. A major problem is going to be logistics, as confirmed by Salama: «It's basically 15 hours by motorbike from the closest town and we are discussing now with the World Food Programme, the possibility of an air-bridge because we will need helicopter support and we are also looking at potentially clearing the runway in Bakoro so we have better access.» The province of Equateur has an estimated population of 2.5 million people with 284 registered health facilities. The Bikoro health zone has a population of around 163,000 people with three hospitals and 19 health centres covering the population, most with limited functionality. Medical supplies are provided by international bodies, but stock outs are frequent. SOURCE: UNIFEED-UNTV
