Switzerland: Sorokin's election to FIFA Council in 'interest of UEFA' — Ceferin

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin stated that the election of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Local Organising Committee CEO, Alexei Sorokin, to FIFA's ruling Council, was «in the interest of UEFA,» at a press conference in Nyon, Wednesday. Ceferin noted that Sorokin «passed the eligibility check, and the congress was unanimous» before adding that «we didn't do that because it is in the interest... Еще of FIFA or anybody else but because it is in the interest of UEFA.» Sorokin was elected to the FIFA Council until 2021 earlier in the day, thus becoming Europe's eighth FIFA Council representative following the election in Geneva's Nyon. Sorokin replaces Russian Football Union President and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitali Mutko, who was barred from standing for election to FIFA's top decision-making body in March due to the FIFA's rules against governmental interference in football. The UEFA president also announced that Madrid's Estadio Metropolitano has been selected to host the 2019 UEFA Champions League final on June 1, 2019. Michele Uva has been appointed as a new UEFA vice-president, following Angel Maria Villar Llona's resignation from UEFA and FIFA functions, while Fernando Gomes has appointed as a European member to the FIFA Council. The next meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee is set to take place in Nyon on December 7.
