Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov criticised the West’s position on the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, speaking while attending the Plenary Session on Disarmament in Geneva on Wednesday.
Lavrov said that nearly all Western nations’ conduct to the nuclear agreement was marked with «indifference and irresponsibility.”
The Russian diplomat stated that US’ withdrawal from the... Еще Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and now from the INF could lead to the nuclear arms race heating up.
“We need follow-up and responsible, collective efforts to ensure international security and stability. Progress towards reducing nuclear weapons on a bilateral, US-Russian basis, as the crisis around the INF Treaty shows, has exhausted itself,” Lavrov added.
On February 1st, US President Donald Trump said that Washington was suspending its obligations under the INF Treaty and intentions to pull out from the agreement in six months if Russia does not comply with it. Moscow has repeatedly called accusations of non-compliance groundless.
The next day Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Moscow's intention to suspend observance of the treaty as «a symmetrical response» to Washington's decision.
