Saturday marked an historic day in football history as the International Football Association Board (IFAB) and FIFA approved the use in football of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, at a meeting in Zurich. The decision came after two years and almost 1,000 test games, in which the results of the technology improved the accuracy of refereeing decisions from 93 percent to 98.8 percent... Еще accuracy. FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced the decision during a press conference at FIFA HQ in Zurich, saying: «as of today, Video Assisted Referee is part of football.» Infantino hopes to see the technology implemented as early as the next World Cup, taking place in Russia this summer. «It will have an impact on the World Cup and on the matches, it will have a positive impact, on the World Cup and on the matches, and this is what the results of the studies showed,» he said. The technology allows the referee to be assisted by an off-field team of refereeing assistants, who analyse video footage to help ensure accurate decisions. The final decision, though, remains with the on-field referee.
