The talks were scheduled to start on November 28, but President of Syria Bashar al-Assad’s government only confirmed their participation the day before. Speaking to the press outside Hotel Royal, the UN’s special envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura confirmed that they will arrive on Wednesday. De Mistura is expected to meet with oppositions delegates, who are already in attendance. Negotiators are hoping to achieve a political solution to the ongoing Syria crisis. Topics for discussion include fresh elections and a new constitution. The six-year civil war has led to more than 330,000 deaths and over half of Syrians being displaced from their homes.
