Switzerland: 2021 Tokyo Summer Olympics 'unique milestone' for post-coronavirus world — IOC chief

International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach said the 2021 Tokyo Summer Olympics would be «a unique milestone» for the world, speaking via video call, Lausanne, Friday. «It's an opportunity, a huge opportunity for Japan and for the entire Olympic movement to have these games next year in Tokyo, because if there we are working well and if everything is going in the right way, these Olympic Games will be the first worldwide gathering then after the coronavirus,» said Bach. «These Olympic Games can be a unique milestone for the entire world,» he added. Answering a journalist's question on the Uyghur community question in China, in regards to the 2022 Winter Olympics which are due to be held in Beijing, Bach said, «we are in constant contact with the organisers of Beijing 2022, like with all the other organisers and there the human rights situation in China was already part of the evaluation procedure there.»
