The trial of an Uzbek asylum seeker charged with carrying out the deadly 2017 Stockholm truck attack started at the Stockholm District Court on Tuesday. Rakhmat Akilov is suspected to be responsible of a stealing a truck and mowing down a crowd of people in Stockholm on April 7 2017, killing five people and injuring 14. Relatives of the attack’s victims and lawyers were seen entering the courtroom as the trial commenced. The prosecution has requested Akilov receive a life sentence and to be extradited from Sweden. Akilov’s trial is scheduled to end on May 9, while the verdict is expected before the summer. Akilov is scheduled to address the court on February 20. Some 300 people have left Sweden to join jihadist groups in Syria and Iraq since 2012, according to the Swedish Security Service. Around 140 have reportedly returned to Sweden since then.
