State of Palestine: Clashes erupt in Bethlehem on 70th Nakba Day protests

Clashes erupted between Israeli forces and Palestinian protesters in Bethlehem on Thursday, as Israeli soldiers disrupted a march held by Palestinians to commemorate the 70th Al-Nakba Day. Protesters marched from Bethlehem city centre to a hill overlooking the illegal Israeli settlement of Har Homa, raising Palestinian flags and chanting slogans in support of the right of return... Еще. Demonstrators also condemned US President Donald Trump's decision to move the US embassy to Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem next week, saying Jerusalem is the capital of Palestine, as well as calling for justice and the end of illegal occupation. Shortly after the beginning of the protest, Israeli soldiers fired tear gas, rubber bullets and stun grenades at the protesters, forcing them to disperse and causing several suffocation cases, but no major injuries were reported. The day is known in Arabic as al-Nakba, or 'the catastrophe.' It is marked on May 15 on the anniversary of the displacement of an estimated 750,000 Palestinians that followed the creation of the State of Israel in 1948.
