Spanish brewery produces green energy from draught beer spoiled during lockdown

The Spanish beer producer Damm has launched an initiative that produces biogas from draught beer spoiled during COVID-19 lockdown. The brewer is removing the kegs of beer that had already passed their optimum consumption date free of charge and replacing them with new ones. Footage shot on Thursday at El Prat de Llobregat factory in Barcelona shows the automated process in which the beer is converted into biogas. The company estimates to recover more than 3.5 million litres of beer that will be transformed into renewable energy to be used in the same plant. «The process consists of emptying the beer that reaches the brewery from the bars and from the distributors and accumulating it in tanks. In these tanks what we do is a microbiological treatment where the beer is digested and biogas is produced, this biogas, once we have cleaned and purified it, enters a cogeneration engine,» explained Karen Peiro, master brewer of the Estrella Damm brewery on Thursday. According to local media reports, with the product recall program, the brewery expects to generate over 650,000 kWh, a figure equivalent to the electricity consumption of nearly 2,500 Spanish households.
