Spain: Zaragoza holds symbolic Catalan independence referendum

Catalans and locals living in Zaragoza, the regional capital of Aragon, took part in a symbolic Catalan independence referendum in a show of solidarity on Sunday. The vote was organised by the Puyalon de Cuchas political party, a left-wing Aragon nationalist organisation. A Catalan resident who cast her ballot said she had come «because it seems to be very important to show solidarity with the... Еще Catalan people.» Another voter stated that the offices of the Catalan communications agency he works for were searched recently by the Spanish Civil Guard and that several of his colleagues were arrested. He described the situation in the country as «very tense.» Catalan citizens will vote in an upcoming historic independence referendum on October 1, in a ballot that has been deemed illegal and unconstitutional by the Spanish Supreme Court.
