Spain's far-right Vox party launched its election campaign in the northwestern town of Covadonga, rich in symbolism of the Reconquista, on Friday.
Santiago Abascal, party leader and co-founder, told a crowd of supporters to be proud of their national history.
«We are not ashamed in the slightest about defending symbols and what our ancestors did over centuries,» he said over a loudspeaker.
«We... Еще are going to use them as a guide of how to fight,» he added.
Abascal also paid a visit to the shrine of Our Lady of Covadonga, which is believed to have miraculously aided the first Christian victory over Moorish invaders in c.720.
The Battle of Covadonga marked the beginning of a 770-year effort to expel Muslim rulers from the Iberian Peninsula known as the 'Reconquista'.
