Spain: Venezuelan ambassador expelled in tit-for-tat row

The Venezuelan ambassador to Spain has been expelled in a tit-for-tat row with Caracas, the spokesperson for the Spanish government Inigo Mendez de Vigo announced during a televised address in Madrid on Friday. The move comes just hours after Venezuela declared the Spanish ambassador in Caracas as persona non grata. «The government responds in a proportional matter and therefore has decided... Еще in strict compliance with the principle of reciprocity to declare the ambassador of Venezuela in Spain persona non grata,» said the government’s spokesperson. He added that «The government wishes to maintain relations based on friendship, respect and cooperation with Venezuela.» On Thursday Venezuela declared the Spanish ambassador Jesus Silva Fernandez a persona non grata, forcing him to leave the country within 72 hours over allegations of interference in the country’s internal affairs.
