Hundreds of unionist protesters gathered outside Civil Guard barracks on Travessera de Gracia in Barcelona on Sunday, to express their gratitude to the Civil Guard officers for their performance in Catalonia. Protesters shook hands with the officers and even handed them flowers, before marching through the city to the Plaza Urquinaona under the motto «Democracy, democracy, democracy. Thank you... Еще Civil Guard and National Police for defending it». The protesters thanked the Civil Guard and the National Police for defending the Spanish constitution on October 1, when officers attempted to stop Catalans from voting in an independence referendum which had been deemed 'illegal' and 'unconstitutional' by the Spanish government. The past week has seen both pro-Spain and pro-independence protests erupt in Spanish cities. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has insisted that he would take any legal measures necessary to stop the Catalan government declaring independence over the next few days.
