Spain: Town in Barcelona province welcomes visitors to «Catalan Republic»

The town of Ullastrell in the Catalan province of Barcelona, has erected an entrance sign on Friday, welcoming visitors to the «Municipality of the Catalan Republic.» The town of Ullastrell also decided to rename a local street to «1st of October» to honour the date of the Catalan referendum. The town’s City Hall has been draped with a yellow ribbon, a symbol in support of Catalan independence... Еще, as well as a banner reading «Freedom for political prisoners,» a reference to the eight jailed former Catalan cabinet members, including jailed activists Jordi Sanchez and Jordi Cuixart. The town’s mayor Joan Balbe defended the entrance sign as an attempt to «cheer everyone up in the difficult times we are going through.» A neighbor responded by putting up a Spanish flag in front of the city hall, a decision commented by the mayor as completely respectable. Balbe added that the sign was met with positive responses from the locals, however not everybody was happy with the sign as «yesterday someone painted over it. Today, however, we saw a neighbour cleaning the sign on his own initiative.»
