Spain: 'This shall not pass' — Catalans flood the streets as Spanish govt. tightens grip

Some 450,000 people gathered in the Catalan regional capital Barcelona on Saturday to protest against the imprisonment of the two Catalan civil society leaders, Jordi Sanchez and Jordi Cuixart. Protesters chanted slogans demanding their freedom and also to decry Madrid's decision to implement article 155 of the Spanish constitution. Referring to Jordi Cuixart, Marcel Mauri, spokesman for Omnium Cultural said «that will not pass because we love democracy.» Sanchez and Cuixart were taken into custody by the Spanish national court on Monday night, and are being detained on possible ground of sedition. The investigation into the pair stems from a September 20 protest which saw a crowd of protesters trapping Spanish Civil Guard (Guardia Civil) officers inside a Catalan government building in Barcelona.
