Spain: Taxi drivers block Barcelona city centre to demand aid amid pandemic

Hundreds of taxi drivers slowed to a crawl as they drove through the centre of Barcelona, on Monday, as a protest demanding aid programmes to help the coronavirus-stricken sector. The taxi drivers are protesting what they consider to be a situation of abandonment amid the pandemic, and ask the government for help make up for their fall in income. «We have lost everything right now, we only stand to gain, and when someone has nothing to lose he becomes a dangerous person. In the end you don't care about anything,» said Tito Alvarez, coordinator of the Elite Taxi union. On Sunday, the Council of Ministers of Spain approved a new state of alarm throughout the country to contain the spread of coronavirus. According to the latest data from the Spanish Ministry of Health, the country has had 1,046,132 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 34,752 deaths with the disease.
