Spain: Scandal-hit Madrid leader resigns following shoplifting accusations

President of the Community of Madrid Cristina Cifuentes announced her resignation in Madrid on Wednesday, after being caught allegedly faking a degree qualification and shoplifting. Cifuentes revealed she had already taken the decision to resign on May 2, but brought that decision forward after footage emerged of her stealing around €40 ($49, £35) worth of goods from a supermarket in 2011... She also said her priority was preventing a left-wing administration in Madrid, which could have been produced following a vote of no confidence.
