Spain: Right-wing «chickens» urge Rajoy to take control of Catalonia

Spanish nationalists dressed in chicken costumes gathered in front of the Moncloa Palace, Madrid, on Friday, endeavoring to persuade Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to apply article 155 of the Spanish constitution, which if evoked would allow the government to intervene directly in the running of an autonomous region. The activists, were organised by the platform 'Hazteoir.org'. Spokesperson for the... Еще site, Miguel Vidal, said «Tens of thousands of citizens, through the platform 'Hazteoir.org', have come to the Moncloa Palace to encourage the prime minister, to tell him not to be afraid to apply the constitution he vowed to defend, to say that if for some reason he can't defend the constitution, and let another person with a sense of responsibility take his place and enforce the constitution.» Catalonia held a referendum on October 1 to decide on the region's independence, however the Spanish government deemed the action 'illegal' and 'unconstitutional'. At least 893 people and 33 police officers were reportedly injured in violent confrontations between voters and Spanish civil police who attempted to stop Catalans from voting at polling stations.
