Spain: Rajoy warns Catalans not to stand against EU ahead of vote

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy attended a Popular Party campaign rally in Mataro on Saturday ahead of the Catalan regional elections on December 21. Rajoy urged Catalans to vote in the elections to «heal wounds» that he said were caused by a «sovereigntist drift.» He warned, «if we want to safeguard the interest of Catalonia, they should stop opposing the people who govern in Europe... Еще, which is what is happening at the moment.» «These elections are meant to give Catalans institutions that would bring their dignity back, to allow the government to take care of all its citizens,» the Spanish prime minister asserted. He went on to say, «the tale of independentism is not producing anything more. No one is supporting it.» Catalonia goes to the polls on December 21 following Madrid's suspension of Catalan's parliament in the wake of the independence referendum on October 1.
