Spain: Puigdemont signs postponed 'declaration of independence'

Catalan President Carles Puigdemont and members of Catalan Parliament signed a so-called 'declaration of independence', but postponed its implementation in Barcelona, Tuesday. The declaration has a symbolic meaning with no legislative backing, as members of the Parliament did not vote in order to approve the document. On Tuesday, Puigdemont called for the suspension of the October 1... Еще independence referendum results to allow for dialogue with Madrid. «We, democratic representatives of the Catalan people, according to the right of self-determination and the right to govern given by citizens, constitute the Catalan Republic,» read Mireia Boya Busquet, a member of Catalan Parliament. Catalonia held a referendum on October 1 to decide on the region's independence, however, the Spanish government deemed the action 'illegal' and 'unconstitutional'. An emergency session of the Parliament in Madrid is scheduled on morning, October 11.
