Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visited the Puerta de Hierro Hospital in Majadahonda, northwest of Madrid, on Friday, where former Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) leader and former Deputy Prime Minister, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, passed away earlier in the day.
Rubalcaba died at the age 67 after having a stroke earlier in the week. According to reports, he was taken to hospital in a... Еще serious condition on Wednesday.
Footage shows both Sanchez and Socialist Party deputy leader Adriana Lastra leaving the hospital together, before departing in different vehicles.
On Twitter, Sanchez thanked Rubalcaba for his services to the country. “Statesman and committed socialist. A whole life dedicated to serving his country. The end of ETA and major social advances have his signature. Thanks, Alfredo. Everyone, Spain and @PSOE, we will always be in your debt,” said Sanchez.
The Socialist party's Twitter account also paid homage to the former politician.
“Our partner Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba just left us. We are speechless and broken with pain. A good and brilliant man in every way leaves us. A statesman who worked for the peace and well-being of everyone leaves us,” said the tweet.
Rubalcaba was the leader of the PSOE from 2011 to 2014, when he resigned and returned to academia, resuming his position as a chemistry professor at the Complutense University of Madrid that he had held prior to entering Spain's parliament in 1993.
