The Congress of Deputies authorised in Madrid on Wednesday a new extension of the state of alarm by 178 votes in favour, 97 abstentions and 75 votes against.
At the beginning of the session, the members present in the chamber observed a minute's silence in honour of the victims of the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Prime Minister, the Socialist Party's Pedro Sanchez said that «in the management of this... Еще pandemic there are no absolute successes» but «there can be absolute errors. And to lift the alarm now would be a great, absolute mistake.”
For its part, the leading opposition party, the People's Party, decided to abstain from the vote and not to give its support to the Spanish government to extend the state of alarm. Despite this, the exceptional situation will remain in place for at least another 14 days, as Sanchez has managed to gather the necessary support.
Information registered in the last few days by the Spanish health authorities has shown a drop in new infections, which has given citizens hope that the confinement measures and other restrictions can eventually be lifted.
